Portable backup or a whole-home system?
The decision is not simply small battery versus large battery. It is selected plug-in loads versus integrated circuits, temporary setup versus fixed equipment, and self-service operation versus professional design.
Begin with the outage scope
Write down what must remain available, what can be moved to a power station, what is permanently wired, and what may safely stay off. “Whole house” is not a useful load list. A refrigerator, modem, lights, central air conditioner, well pump, electric water heater, and range impose very different energy and output constraints.

Signals that portable planning may no longer be enough
- The must-run list includes permanently wired or large 240-volt equipment.
- The required energy remains high after nonessential loads are removed.
- Automatic operation is essential and nobody can safely move or connect temporary equipment.
- The plan depends on rooftop solar, transfer equipment, load-control hardware, or utility interconnection.
- The consequence of failure involves life safety or medical care.
These signals do not select a product. They mean the next artifact should be a qualified, site-specific design and quote—not a larger number typed into the portable calculator.
Prepare a useful whole-home quote request
- 1Bring interval usage or bills
Use actual energy history instead of estimating the entire house from appliance lists alone.
- 2Name backed-up circuits
Ask the provider to state exactly what remains powered and what is excluded or load-managed.
- 3Require usable specifications
Request usable storage, continuous output, surge behavior, solar recharge assumptions, warranty conditions, and expansion limits.
- 4Compare total installed cost
Include required electrical work, permits, equipment, monitoring, service, and maintenance—not only battery hardware.
